    Lit Fests a-go-go…

    Tis the season…

Over the next week, I’ll be talking about a fair bit about Shakespeare, Toast, and just why this 400 year old guy was just so damned good at what he did. Which’ll make a change…

I’ll be at the Chester Literature Festival, the Ucheldre Centre in Holyhead, the Guildford Book Festival and the Peak Festival of Books, all over the coming ten days.

    The Book Depository…

…asked me recently to write my Top Ten Favourite Books…

I am approaching this from a Desert Island point of view, in that it is an impossible task to bring your favourite books down to a mere 10, much like that terrible equally impossible question, ‘What is your favourite film?’ How can you answer? In mentioning one you leave out twenty. After great deliberation, ranting and raving, here are ten of my most favourite – bearing in mind, Desert Island-like, I get the complete works of Shakespeare as standard, which I realized after selecting wasn’t included in the original ten, mea culpa. All of these books I have read and re-read. There’s just something about them that keeps me going back, like Scott’s Bladerunner and Kubrick’s The Shining…

    BBC Radio Shropshire

Clare Ashford interviewed me recently for BBC Radio Shropshire, and the record is going out today (Monday 13th October) at around 2.40pm GMT.

“In the afternoon, actor Ben Crystal will recapture the mastery of the Bard’s language and characterisation.”

…says The Independent. No pressure then.

But they do not lie, and I am talking on Sunday 12th October at The Independent Woodstock Literary Festival. It’s first year at Blenheim Palace and the first year of The Independent’s sponsorship:

[Over the weekend] leading figures from the political and cultural world will explore themes ranging from Shakespeare’s plays and Jane Austen’s letters to the Iraq war.

My Shakespeare on Toast talk is at 2.30pm, The Marlborough Room, Blenheim Palace. For those of you nearby, there will be tea and a log fire too…

See here for a link to the festival, and here for The Independent’s review of Toast

Hay Winter Weekend / Blenheim Palace

I’ve been invited to talk at the Hay Winter Weekend (28-30th November) at 9am on the Sunday morning… They’ll be serving toast, apparently, which means there are now two things to get out of bed for…

And it’s just over a week until I’m due to talk at the Independent Woodstock Literary Festival (9-12 October), in the Marlborough Room at Blenheim Palace. Roaring fires and Shakespeare… Who could ask for more? My talk is on the Sunday, at 2.30pm

See here for details of these, and other upcoming Toast talks…
